Introduction
ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) is becoming an essential focus in modern education. Many schools in Vietnam are beginning to integrate sustainability into their curricula, especially through hands-on activities. One of the most meaningful and accessible initiatives is mangrove planting, where students can directly contribute to environmental protection.
As part of the Vietnam ESG Project, a group of students took part in the Can Gio Afforestation Program – a mangrove planting activity within the Can Gio Biosphere Reserve. This experience allowed them to explore nature, learn about mangrove ecosystems, and understand why Can Gio is known as the “green lung” of Ho Chi Minh City.
Through this activity, students not only learned outside the classroom but were also encouraged to develop a strong sense of community responsibility, teamwork, and long-term environmental awareness.
1. The Can Gio Afforestation Program: Learning Through Real Environmental Action
1.1 Why Mangrove Planting Matters in Vietnam’s ESG Projects
The mangrove forests in Can Gio play a crucial role in protecting the coastal environment. Mangrove trees help reduce wave impact, prevent erosion, stabilize soil, and absorb large amounts of CO₂. This makes the area a key focus for climate change adaptation efforts in Vietnam.
By incorporating mangrove planting into ESG education, students engage in a tangible learning experience rather than just theoretical study. Walking through the mud and planting each mangrove shoot helps them deeply appreciate how even small actions contribute significantly to the ecosystem.

1.2 Experiencing Mangrove Planting in the Mudflats of Can Gio
Upon entering the mangrove forest, the students were guided by local experts on how to identify mangrove species, plant shoots correctly, and protect the newly planted area to ensure a high survival rate.
Despite having to navigate thick mud, everyone showed great enthusiasm. Moments of balancing on slippery ground, holding hands to avoid falling, and laughing when someone got stuck in the mud created joyful and memorable experiences.
This lively atmosphere reflected the spirit of student environmental activities, where students not only gain knowledge but also discover their ability to cooperate and support one another in a challenging natural setting.

1.3 Lessons from an ESG Education Program in Vietnam
The program went beyond tree planting by including educational sessions on:
- The importance of mangroves to the ecosystem
- Why Can Gio is central to Vietnam’s ESG projects
- How local communities live in harmony with nature
Real-life experiences help young people to:
- Develop a sense of environmental responsibility
- Foster sustainable thinking
- Learn problem-solving skills in practical settings
- Build confidence through community involvement
1.4 The Long-term Value of the Can Gio Afforestation Project
By planting each mangrove shoot themselves, the students contributed to a lasting positive change. Every tree planted today will grow into a natural barrier against waves, protecting coastal communities for decades to come.
This sustainable impact is threefold:
- Environmental benefits: restoring ecosystems and increasing mangrove coverage
- Educational benefits: nurturing green thinking and civic responsibility in students
- Social benefits: spreading awareness and care for nature within families and communities
Because of these reasons, the Can Gio Afforestation Program stands out as a model ESG educational activity in Vietnam.

2. Inspiring the Next Generation Through Meaningful ESG Projects
The mangrove planting program at Can Gio offers a fresh approach to sustainable education. Instead of just talking about the environment, students get their hands dirty, planting green shoots and witnessing the immediate effects of their efforts.
Experiences like this build a solid foundation for the future generation, those who will play key roles in shaping a greener, more sustainable Vietnam. The Vietnam ESG Project provides not only knowledge but also inspires initiative and responsibility.
Each mangrove tree planted serves as a reminder that big changes begin with small actions. Programs like the Can Gio Afforestation Project will continue to plant seeds of hope, awareness, and love for nature in the hearts of young people.
